The words echoed through Caroline’s mind. It’s been a few hours since Tyler brought her home, too tipsy from the party to drive herself. Now she’s stuck alone, head pounding and heart heavy.
He boggled her. Klaus did.
Why did he even risk coming to the school? Elena, of course, she told herself. He needed his doppelganger blood bag, Caroline. But that wasn’t it. There was something else, she just felt it. Bonnie mentioned that Klaus already planned to leave by sunset, with or without Elena. So why put his life on the line instead of getting a head start on Alaric?
Caroline tried, and tried, but still, she couldn’t get him out of her thoughts. She blamed the alcohol. And Klaus… she blamed him too. Because he saved her, calmed her, and forced her to get to safety. Somehow he knew that she would still try to save Elena too, tortured as she was. She didn’t know how it happened. How his steady voice convinced her to leave, how at that moment all that existed was his lingering eyes and his plea: “You stay inside. You understand me? Do you understand me?”
She took a glance at the drawing she knew so well, and felt a guilty pang in her chest. She hated him. Hated him because he saved her, saved her when he didn’t need to. And now he’s gone. He’s gone and there was no way to thank him again.
